that if art includes humour, it somehow robs the work of its substance. Coralie's take is that art should evoke emotion and if that emotion involves having a good belly laugh, then the work is a success. Coralie paints the things that amuse her; ordinary things that people look at every day, but seldom really see. All of her subject matter bears the indelible mark of humanity, warts and all. She sculpts the kind of characters that you're likely to meet on the street. They are the faces of people that you swear you've met somewhere before and the histories of their lives are etched in their expressions. Coralie, who grew up in New Zealand, now makes her home in Gibsons Landing, British Columbia. STATEMENT Nothing puts a warm smile on my face more than the anticipation of spending time in my studio. It's always been like that, no matter what medium I was working in. Over the years of creative experimentation I have tried and enjoyed many mediums. Since childhood, I had delighted in making soft dolls and in 1997 I discovered polymer clay; the perfect medium for creating my vision. I began painting as a diversion from the labour-intensive process of creating characters, and in doing so, I discovered a new challenge and a new thrill. Now I am using both mediums and infusing them in a way that I feel I am having my cake and eating it too! I don't know what I'd do without art - it's what balances me. Art is the antidote to wringing my hands in angst. I strive to keep it fun because laughing matters. About the process: It seems that you can teach an old dog some new tricks... and we both learned several new tricks throughout this process. One of our challenges was to meld the paint and mosaic mediums in a way that it might be difficult to discern one from the other - to fool the eye. The painting moved back and forth between our studios several times. Each time it came back, the piece had changed enough to inspire or require further work. Although the subject matter remained constant, some of the individual elements changed dramatically, intrinsically altering the previous effect. It required flexibility of mind, medium, and vision.
